About Rare Breeds
A rare breed of livestock is one whose population has reduced considerably, to the point where the genetic diversity of the breed is threatened. Many rare breeds of farm animals display characteristics not often found in modern food producing breeds, such as longevity, disease resistance and calm dispositions.
The Suffolk Punch horse is a rare breed whose population is making a comeback. This breed of heavy horse is known for having a calm, gentle disposition and ability to work well under harness. Many small farmers are trading their tractors for real horse power as they desire a closer, more integrated connection with the earth they are tending. Here at Living Proof Farm we are dedicated to the preservation of rare breeds, most notably with the Suffolk Punch horse. We are planning to expand our farm to include Guernsey Goats, Glouchestershire Old Spot pigs, and Speckled Sussex chickens.
